“This

SOUNDS
RADICAL? VETERAN WHITE HOUSE REPORTER HELEN THOMAS DOESN'T THINK SO.
PETER'S NEW
YORK, August 19, 2007---The other day, I came across a column written
by veteran news reporter Helen Thomas. I wasn't sure if she was still
writing. I do remember
hearing that, just recently, she agreed to vacate her customary chair
at the White House press briefings. Subconsciously, I must have known
she was still active.
Still, it
was a surprise to come across her column. I first remember watching
Thomas during the Reagan Administration, when I was a business editor
and writer for a New York City newspaper. Thomas always had hard and
antagonistic questions for Ronald Reagan at press conferences, and
being a Reagan supporter, I felt that she was a bit unfair. Years
later, I
remember hearing that she quit UPI after being an employee of that news
agency almost forever. I suppose she had some differences with the new
management, and had seen UPI change radically from what it was in years
past.
I do
believe that writing a column is the best thing she can do these days,
as it makes her an unaligned journalist, answerable to nobody but
herself. She was born in 1920. She celebrated her 87th birthday earlier
this month.
Having come
across her column, and finding an email address at the bottom of it, I
decided to write her. Unfortunately, I lost track of the column I was
responding to. But below I have posted my original email and her reply,
which
took me by surprise, not so much because of its content--which is in
itself encouraging--as because she
responded at all.

Subject: On
your column on Bush's wiretapping
Dear Ms.
Thomas:
You ask why
Bush cannot obey the law? It's very simple. He has a clear objective,
conquest of Middle East oil, and will arrange to crack down on any domestic
political dissent, no matter what extreme measures he need to employ to
do it with.
This
administration, and its Democratic fellow travelers such as Hillary
Clinton, Joseph Biden, and many more, are part of a ruthless gang that
has taken over our
government. It appears that there is no credible challenge to them.
They have covered all their bases. If there is a challenge to the war
in the streets a la
Vietnam, the Patriot Act and laws of similar ilk have given the
Administration the tools to crack down on it and stop it in its tracks.
It's a slam
dunk!
